filzfun: Issue 69 winter 2020/2021
Published on November 27

For a long time, using commercial prefelt batches was frowned upon by many feltmakers. Now the Australian artist Catherine O’Leary shows us in a new book what breathtaking projects she created with this kind of material. We introduce the artist and her work in the winter issue of the filzfun as well as Petra Nasdal from the Niederlausitz, who works silk from her own silk worm breed into her felted objects, and Hanna Tsukanova from the Ukraine, whose needle-felted dog- and cat portraits look amazingly true to life. Valentina Kehl from Kazachstan is particularly fond of horses. She sculptures felted horse busts in the hollow-body technique true to the smallest detail.
Several ambitious projects take up felting as their main theme: Occupational therapists to-be from Dornstadt home-felted squares with Corona motifs under the supervision of Petra Kunz that were combined digitally as an idea for a carpet. In an initiative called „Felt Blossom“ Filzblüte in Aachen differently abled people felt a range of products together and sell them in their own shop. Heike Roth in turn instructs future childrens‘ and youth home teachers in feltmaking . Together they filled a chest with felted playthings.
Even though most exhibitions and events had to be cancelled due to the Corona pandemic, a precious few did actually take place. We take you to the shows „Filz im Raum in Form“ by Margot Krug in Gunzenhausen,
to „Wir WOLLEn METALL“ by the artists‘ collective wollmodus in Austria as well as to the anniversary show by the studio Meldani in Switzerland. We report on the course of lectures offered by the German Filz-Netzwerks in the felto Filzwelt Soltau.
As usual you will find a detailed step-by-step instruction in our winter issue as well: Ilona Riehle describes how you can felt a note book cover with an individual motif in shingle technique for Christmas.
